Nairobi is a city where the wild and the metropolitan share the same postcode — lions within reach of traffic lights, ambition rising with the dawn. For 54 Mag Issue 14, this project set out to portray the city as it truly is: elegant, restless, generous, contradictory, and entirely its own. Rather than a tourist’s overview, it’s a portrait built from the voices of the people creating Nairobi’s present and future.
Nairobi doesn’t perform for the outsider or soften itself to be understood. The task was to honour that — to resist the “emerging city” cliché and instead capture Nairobi as a place that has already arrived. That meant treating the people and places not as backdrops, but as the city itself, and holding their honesty and energy on screen without flattening it.
The film moves through the city via the people who define it: Cultiva Kenya, where dining is philosophy — soil to plate in footsteps, not supply chains; Angie Owiti, building futures by hand so the city competes globally; Nairobi Sketch Tour, reading history through streets that move like murals; Geco Cafe, where music folds strangers into one rhythm; Michael Soi’s canvas at Circle Art Agency, holding the city’s wit and honesty; and Hero Nairobi, where the rooftop lights shimmer like stories still waiting to be told. Each a voice, guided throughout by culture curator Nomadic Rasta.
